2008 Sept – Large Hadron Rap MRI Technologists were some of the first geeks (when the word “Geek” wasn’t really cool) so when the CERN super-collider was being charged up for functioning, we were excited about the science that this enormous tool could discover. While the technology between an MRI system and what is used in CERN is quite different, there are significant similarities. CERN is equipped with many extremely large hadron superconductor magnets (built in some ways similar to MRI scanners) for projecting the internal mass of protons around at high rates of speed (the speed of light, around 186,000 miles per second) until they collide just to see what other types of energy are produced during the collision. With mass, the equation for matter and anti-matter should balance out, but it is just not happening, so the search for what scientists have dubbed the elusive Higgs Boson is underway.
Basically twelve different types of vibrating particles of matter and four forces of nature, which make up our world.
